Facebook's breaking news app may be called 'Notify'

The app will reportedly let users subscribe to publishers and thendeliver breaking news through notifications.
Facebook’s rumoured breaking news app may be known as ‘Notify’. It is expected to launch by the end of October this year. As per the report from The Awl, the social network giant is currently testing the app with a few selected partners.
From the screenshots, it appearsthat users will have the option tosubscribe to the publishers of their choice. The publishers are known as ‘Stations’ in the app and include the likes of Huffington Post, BuzzFeed among others. Under the Stations, users can also select specific topics known as 'sub-stations'. Once users subscribe to them, they will startreceiving the breaking news updates through notifications. Tapping on a particular notification will take users to thespecific publication from where they can read the complete news. The news of Facebook working on the news app was firstreported earlier this year. At that time, it was reported that the app would send 100-character news via notifications. Along with the report, the screenshot of the app from the point of viewof a publisher was also posted. The screenshot showed the text fields for entering the name of station, sub-station, notification text, and the URL.The app would be competing with Twitter’s newly launched feature ‘Moments’. The feature lets users stay updated about live events as well as trending stories onTwitter. The stories are also categorized into varioussub-categories like sports, entertainment, news, etc. The good thing about ‘Moments’ is that users don’t need to follow any specific Twitter account for receiving the update. Each story comprises of tweets, videos, images, vines, and GIFs. Twitter has also teamed up with various publishers like BuzzFeed, Bleacher Report, Fox News, etc for curating and delivering the latest stories. The feature is currently available only in U.S. with plans of expanding it to other regions in coming months.

Facebook testing new Shopping feed feature

With the new feature, users will be able to browse through products inside the Facebook app, and buy directly from the social media platform.

Facebook announced yesterday that it will be testing some new features to offer an in-app shopping experience to users. With users spending a significant amount of time on the social media site, Facebook will aim to cash in on creating a seamless shopping experience, without leaving the site.According to Facebook, almost half of its users “actively look forproducts, with a majority of them discovering new products in News Feed, Pages, and Groups.” Accordingly, it is experimenting with features thatwill integrate a shopping experience within Facebook itself. The company notes that the redirected pages from ads often take a long time to load. With the new Canvas feature, clicking on an ad will open up a variety of products in a fast-loading, full screen interface. Users will then be redirected to the retailer’s website to buy the product. It will also be testing a separate Shopping feed that is solely focused on discovering, sharing and buying products. “We’re testing with a limited set of small businesses in the US who are also testing the Shop sectionon Pages. Their products will be eligible to appear there. Over time we’ll explore incorporating additional content into this experience, such as items listed for sale in Facebook Groups,” Facebook said. The Shop section is a recent addition, wherein businesses can display their products on theFacebook page, allowing users to buy directly. The new Shopping feed is similar to howInstant Articleswork for news. Last year, it had introduced the'Buy' call to action buttonfor product ads on Facebook. Customers can purchase the product by clicking on it, withoutleaving Facebook. The transaction, however, is handled by a third party. The feature isalso available on Twitter.Facebook is trying to leverage its expanding user base to attract more businesses to use its platform for selling products. It is also trying to appeal to users plagued with slow and buggy shopping experiences on third party websites. It wants “to build native experiences that make it easier for both people todiscover products on mobile andbusinesses to drive more sales.”

IBM is smitten by Apple; orders 50000 Macbooks, to scale up to 200000 over the year!

You either love Apple or you don’t. There aren’t two ways about it. If you love Apple, you’re labeled a fanboy. And there’s no dearth of people who love Apple. We believe that’s a good thing. To love and appreciate a technology product is great. But turns out the latest Apple fanboy is IBM!Yes, IBM. Yes, the guys who laid thefoundation for DOS. The folks who created the PC platform. The folks who gave rise to Microsoft, and as a result, Windows. According to a report a few months ago, IBM placed an order of up to 50000 Apple Macbooks for its employees. However, towards the end of the year, the plan is to scale that number up to 150000 to 200000. That’s effectively the whole workforce of IBM. The decision, in addition to being a great milestone for Apple, is significant from a tech history point of view. The reason, according to IBM, is simple. From the statistical data of IT support,5 percent of IBM employees with Macbooks require support. In contrast 40 percent of employees on Windows require IT support.IBM believes that this reduced dependence on support is enough reason to opt for Macbooks despitethe higher initial cost of investment.Just last year, IBM and Microsoft announced a partnership, through which IBM would push Apple’s technology among its enterprise customer base.(Also read:How much is too much for the new iPhone 6s?)For Microsoft, this comes at a time when it has reinvented the way its users experience Windows. A lot is at stake for Microsoft with Windows 10. Ever since Satya Nadella has taken over as Microsoft chief, he has transformedthe identity of the company and its products. He very famously said during the recent Windows 10 eventthat he’d set a new goal for the company and that was to move people from “needing Windows to choosing Windows to loving Windows.”

xolo black review (best camera phone)

Competition in the budget smartphone market is heating up quicker than an overclockedprocessor in a frying pan. The most excitement is happening in the sub-Rs. 15,000 price bracket. Brands such asXiaomi,Motorola, Yu Televentures,Micromaxand a handful of small-name upstartsare battling furiously for your money. Not one to be left out, Lava Mobiles' premium brand Xolo is making its presence felt withthe Rs. 12,999Xolo Black. As the name suggests, it is only available in one colour, and there are no prizes for guessing which. It's well specified, has some quirky features such as dual cameras and a front flash, and tries very hard to scream 'premium'. But the market is a cutthroat and unpredictable place, so Xolo has its work cut out for it. We find out if it has what it takes inour review.Look and feelThe Xolo Black bears an uncanny resemblance to theSony Xperia Z3(Review|Pictures), thanks to its curved edges and matte-finished metal frame. Where most of the competition (including the similarly pricedXiaomi Mi4i) uses polycarbonate as the material for the body, the Xolo Black uses glass. Both the front and back panels are toughened Corning Gorilla Glass, which should help in keeping them scratch-free. They're also incredibly reflective and are grime magnets, so you'll find that youneed to wipe the phone clean quite often. The 5.5-inch full-HD screen makes up a little over 69 percent of the front of the XoloBlack, with narrow side bezels and a bit more space on the top and bottom. There are off-screen soft keys below the screen, which we feel are too small and too widely spaced. These stay dark by default untilpressed. This makes them a bit tricky to use, and we often found ourselves tapping on dead space. The front camera and its dedicated flash are in the two top corners of the front, while the earpiece occupies a small portion of thetop-middle.The back of the device has the Xolo and Hive branding, along with the dual-camera setup. The two lenses are placed symmetrically on either side ofthe rear flash. The metallic edge wraps around the device smoothly, with the charging port and speakers at the bottom, and the 3.5mm headset socket at the top.The SIM tray is on the left and holds both SIM cards, while thepower and volume buttons are on the right. An annoying trend that we've been seeing now finds its way to the Xolo Black: the second SIM slot doubles up as the microSD card card slot, which means you have to choose between dual-SIM functionality and more storage. We don't believe there is any good reason that anyone should be forced to make that choice. The power button doubles up as a status light, which we found a bit strange. This means that you can't see that you have new notifications unless the Xolo Black is facing you at a specific angle, which somewhat defeats the purposeof having the light. A traditionalnotification light at the front of the device would have made much more sense. On the whole, it's a well built and smartphone that stands out next to its competition and feels more premium than its price tag of Rs. 12,999 would suggest.Specifications and SoftwareThe Xolo Black uses the extremely popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 (2nd Gen) SoC, which means it supports 4G. Fortunately, it is compatible with band 40, so the phone can be used for 4G services from Indian operators. The 5.5-inch display has a full-HD resolution, with a pixels-per-inch count of 401. The Xolo Black also features 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage (with support for up to 32GB microSD cards), and a 3,200mAh Lithium-polymer battery. The rear camera setup features two sensors; a 13-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel secondary unit. The front camera uses a 5-megapixel sensor, and both the front and back have their own flashes.Android Lollipop 5.0.2 powers the Xolo Black, with the company's proprietary Hive user interface layered on top. Hive is an attractive UI for the most part, with a handful of features and tweaks that aren't available on other devices in the price range. The app drawer is different, for one, andsorts apps horizontally by category. You can sort by alphabet, time of installation orapp category, which is a good way to differentiate from the typical app drawer that we're used to.Hive itself is sometimes a bit slow for our liking. It's occasionally sluggish in loading screens, and its animations take too long to play through. Most of the time, it does work well, so we can't complain too much. The default Hive lock screen is terrible, with very little appeal to it. Luckily, it can be disabled and replaced with the stock Android lock screen. The stockoption also lets you customise quick launch keys and displaysnotifications without you having to unlock the device, soit's the obvious choice here. All in all, it's a better user interface that what most other manufacturers offer. It's heavily customisable with plenty of tweaks and settings for the user to play with. The Xolo Black also has a handful of useful preinstalled apps, including McAfee, Comet Browser and a few Hive-branded security and privacy tools. The preinstalled apps unfortunately can't be removed, but they aren't too heavy on the phone's resources and can be stopped from the app settings menu and then ignored.CameraThe Xolo Black interestingly uses a dual-camera setup on the rear. This comprises of a 13-megapixel primary sensor and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor. This is meant to improve autofocus speed and also let you refocus on different parts of the picture after it has been taken, similar to theHTC One (M8)'s dual-camera feature. Autofocus is a bit quicker than we've noticed on most other similarly priced smartphones, but not significantly so. The refocusing feature works well, but is still essentially a gimmick that won't be put to use very often by most people.A couple of other camera features of note are OptiZoom and ChromaFlash. OptiZoom aims to improve the quality of zoomed in images, but does not actually do much. Digitally zoomed images are grainy as always. ChromaFlash involves capturing two images in quick succession; one with the flash and one without. The frames are then combined by the software to create a single image that tones down the effect of the flash for improved realism. This works surprisingly well; images cameout a fair bit better than what we've seen from similar smartphones in terms of colour and brightness.
(Click for full-size image)The camera itself is decent, taking pictures that are sharp, detailed and fairly vibrant. Whites have a tendency to appear too bright, so pictures with a lot of white tend to lose some detail. The front camera is a standard 5-megapixel shooter, but interestingly has its own flash. Selfie lovers will be pleased with this, since it significantly improves shots taken in dark places. It's reasonable to say that snap-happy users will be pleased with the cameras on the Xolo Black. The camera software is easy to use and features all the settings and modes that you'd ordinarily want from a smartphone. However, there are two apps for the camera; the ordinary one that features abunch of filters and settings modes, and the dual-camera app which utilises the 2-megapixel secondary sensor but does away with a lot of the features that the main app offers. This turned out to be very confusing for us, since taking a picture now additionally involved making a decision as to which app's features would be better for the picture we intended to take. It would have been better to have the dual-camera mode worked into the standard app, and we're hoping a future firmware update fixes this.PerformancePerformance is decent on the Xolo Black, with the device handling most tasks well. Hive UI is a little sluggish at times, but this doesn't affect performance in apps and games. We had no serious concerns with the phone during our time with it; the Black ran smoothly and had no malfunctions or crashes of anysort. Voice call quality was standard, as was performance with audio using both headphones and the device's own speakers. We also put the Black through our assortment of HD videos. The device ran most of them with ease, and had file format issues with some of the others. We played Sonic Runners on the phone and felt no lag or performance issues whatsoever. Multitasking would tend to slow the phone down a little bit, so it's advisable not to keep too many apps running at the same time. The display, while full-HD and suitably sharp, is a little weak in terms of colour and contrast. It certainly isn't the cleanest full-HD display we've seen on a smartphone. The Xolo Black scored 32,519 in AnTuTu and 20,996 in Quadrant. We also ran 3D MarkIce Storm Extreme and GFXBench, where the phone scored 5427 points and 14fps respectively. This is more or less on par with other Snapdragon 615 devices. The battery lasted 9 hours, 41 minutes during our video loop battery test, which is a bit low for device with a 3,200mAh battery. In day to day use, the battery lasted a whole day withease.VerdictThe Xolo Black is essentially a no-fuss smartphone with slightly above-average capabilities. It performs on par with most other devices in its price range, looks decent, and has a couple of features that stand out. Its dual rear cameras, front flash and generally pleasing performance with photographydo help distinguish it in a way.We like this phone, and we think you'll like too. If you're looking for a decent phone thatdoes its job, and don't want to spend a lot of money, the Xolo Black is definitely one to consider. Man buys Google.com for $12 for 1 minute, gets reward

A man who bought the Google.com domain name for $12and owned it for about a minute has been rewarded by Google for uncovering the flaw.Last month, student and formerGoogleemployee Sanmay Ved was able to buy Google.com for the small sum due to an administrative issue at the search giant. He was surprised to find the domain up for sale and when he went to buy it, the $12 transaction went through and the ownership of the search site was transferred. But within about a minute the purchase had been canceled and Ved's money was refunded."Google could do this given the registration service used by me (aka Google Domains) belonged toGoogle," Ved wrote in ablog post on LinkedIn.
The ex-Googler flagged the flaw to the search giant's security team and they rewarded him with an as-yet undisclosed sum of money. When they found out Ved was going to give the bounty to charity, Google doubled the amount."I wrote back and told them it was never about money, and asked thatthe money be donated to charity tothe Art of Living India Foundation," Ved wrote."They have replied and have statedthat they understand and respect the fact that this was not about getting a reward. Despite that, given what they found, and how this was handled, they are 'excited' to offer me a reward."
Giving money to people who flag up potential security or administrative flaws is a common practice at Google and other tech companies. It's known as a "bug bounty".Ved's story is the latest in a long line of domain name-related news around Google. Last week, just a few days after Google officially became a subsidiary of Alphabet, itacquired the domain name abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com

Apple to formally open stores in India by next month

Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Pluswill go on salefrom October 16 onwards in India, meanwhile the company has another piece of exciting news. Cupertino-headquartered Apple has reportedly inked a deal with Croma (Infiniti Retail) to set up its first brick-and-mortar Apple Store in India. So far, India’s mandatory local-sourcing norms for a brand’s foreign direct investment inretail sector has been a hurdle for Apple to setup its store in India. In a test phase, Apple will set up a designated space in Croma’s five outletsin Mumbai and one in Bengaluru. In Croma, about 400-500 sq. ft. space will be dedicated to offering the same design, lighting, and overall experience as other Apple Stores globally. That report is quite odd for Apple alreadyhad its presence at Croma’s five outlets in Mumbai with Apple Solutions Expert ready to assist the customers. About fiveyears ago, the Apple Solutions Expert training program was started by Apple totrain the staff to act as consultant and solutions provider to the customers visiting Croma. At third party multi-brandelectronic stores, an agency hired the staff and they would wear t-shirts with Apple Reseller written on it. Next were the premium reseller franchise stores dedicated for selling only Apple productsand would have their own staff.
So the new development only means that Apple plans to rebrand its presence at select Croma locations. The Apple Solutions Expert training program might be rebooted with a different name and attire.Meanwhile, Indians can only hope for Apple products to be priced closely to that in the US. However, the 16GB iPhone 6s sale price is speculated to be around INR62,000 ($949) which is way higher than $649 for base model in the US. It is indeed ironic that Apple is announcing its formal entry by introducing costlier iPhone models in India.

Google registers two new drone designs with the FAA: Reports

Google might be working on two new styles of delivery drone, according toFAA filings. These twonew UAVs could possibly be tested by the company’s experimental division Google X.According to a report byEngadget, the two aircrafts have been named M2 and B3. The M2 made the FAA registry on October 2 while the B3 was listed on October 7. Each of these have been registered with theFAA as a ‘fixed wing multi-engine’ electric aircraft and weigh less than55 pounds. The report further statesthat both drones are registered nearto the company’s Boulder, CO office, rather than its main campus in Mountain View, CA.This goes in line with the information uncovered by The Guardian which suggested the craftwould “weigh less than 25kg (55lbs), using multiple electric engines to fly at up to 100mph and as high as 120 meters.”In addition, Astro Teller, Head of Google X, toldThe Wall Street Journalearlier this year that the company was already working on a design that “moves away from the single-wing-based approach.” Tellerhad already stated that he plans an update on the drone program at some point this year.Look’s like we will find out more about the company’s drone/drones sooner than expected!
